The School of Literature and Journalism started undergraduate program in 1990. In 2000, it cooperated with the Faculty of Liberal Arts of South China Normal University to cultivate master degree candidates. Ten years later, it began cooperation with the Faculty of Liberal Arts of Central China Normal University and the Faculty of Liberal Arts of Yunnan University to cultivate full-time master degree candidates respectively.
Recently, the School has been increasingly active in international exchange and cooperation. In 2009, it signed cooperative agreement with Japan’s Mandarin Power Research Institute. And every year it selects and sends students to Woosuk University and Daejeon University in the Republic of Korea for study exchange, and has built an internship base for TCSL (Teaching Chinese as a Second Language) majors in Daejeon University. In 2012, the Research Institute of Korean Language and Culture, a cooperative institute of our university and Korea’s Daejeon University, was established and affiliated to our School.
The School of Literature and Journalism has built a strong faculty. At present,, there are 13 professors, 27 associate professors, 10 supervisors of postgraduates, and 20 doctors (2 of them are Ph. D. students). In recent years, the School has made great achievements on discipline and specialty construction. The discipline of Chinese Language and Literature is one of the three disciplines that are authorized to review vice-senior titles in our university. Also, we have built a provincially characteristic key discipline—History of Particular Subjects (cooperated with the School of History and Culture), a provincially characteristic major--the major of Chinese Language and Literature, two provincially outstanding teaching teams—the teaching team of Ancient Chinese Literature and the teaching team of Theories of Literature and Art, a provincially excellent course—the course of Ancient Chinese Literature, a provincially excellent open course—the course of Ancient Chinese Literature, two provincially excellent video courses—Appreciation of Classic Poems, and Chaoshan History and Culture, a provincially excellent open course—College Chinese Language and Literature,oneExperimentalTeachingDemonstration Centerat provincial level–HSNU FilmandTelevisionMedia TeachingDemonstrationCenter,and one provincial college students off-campus practice base—Hanshan Normal University Blue Sea Practice and Teaching Base of Cultural Innovation.
Since 2012, the School of Literature and Journalism annually selects outstanding students of the Chinese Literature (students of normal education) major and implements elite cultivation plan by offering elite education. This plan has gain satisfying results.
Taking advantage of its discipline construction, the School has strived to develop poem education, and has been awarded “Important Base of College Poem Education” for its distinctive features.
The School has steadily improved its quality of talents cultivation. In the past three years, 33 students have succeeded in the selection exam of master degree candidates, while another 68 passed the selection exam of civil servants. And our students have achieved greatly in various kinds of professional competitions both provincially and nationally. Take the year 2012 for illustration. A team consisting of students from the School won the golden prize in the 8th Challenge Cup/Fuxing Cup Entrepreneurship Competition for college students; another student won the Review Award of Short Story in Taiwan’s 34th Associated Press Prize Competition. Then, in 2014, our students won Victory Laurel in Poem and Poetry respectively in the Poetry Competition of Chinese College Students.
The School has built up its fame in Eastern Guangdong Province thanks to our graduates’ solid foundation of their respective specialty, outstanding professional skills, and good social reputation. More impressive is that its graduates throughout the years enjoy a high employment rate of more than 95%.
